MSci Microbiology

Course Overview

This five-year undergraduate degree is an integrated master's programme that focuses on the study of microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, algae, and protozoa. It is a research-led course suitable for those interested in a research career. For the first two years, students follow the same curriculum as the joint Honours biomedical sciences degrees, with specialisation in Microbiology starting in the third year. The final year, the fifth, is dedicated to developing research skills, which includes a significant project component.

Knowledge on this course is assessed in several ways, including written exams, essays, presentations, and computer-based exercises. Students' practical skills are assessed through practical tests, lab reports, and project reports. Their ability to communicate is also tested with essays and oral presentations. The course involves around 240 hours of lectures, practical classes, tutorials, and computer-based learning, which also helps students build their teamwork skills.
