Overview

The BSc Sport and Exercise Science degree looks into the scientific foundations of human performance in sports and exercise and how these can be applied to improve health and prevent disease. Students will understand topics such as physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition in a sporting context. 

The course is designed to help students with both theory and practical skills, which prepares them for different careers in the field. The course also offers an optional work placement year or an opportunity to study abroad, enhancing employability.

Students are taught through lectures, seminars, practical sessions in laboratories, and studying on their own and are assessed through written examinations, practical assessments, presentations, laboratory reports, essays, and project work, including a dissertation in the final year.

Entry Requirements

Candidates must submit a personal statement, an academic or employer reference, and a CV to show their work experience, which is optional.

Grade Requirements:

  • Candidates need 112–120 UCAS points, from two or three A-levels, which should include 32 UCAS points from science subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, PE, Physics, Psychology, Sports Science, or Sports Studies. 
  • The International Baccalaureate requirement is 25 points. 

English Proficiency:

  • Candidates need an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no component below 5.5. 
  • The PTE and TOEFL are also accepted. 
  • Candidates who do not meet the requirements can take a pre-sessional English programme before starting the course.

Cost of Study

For international students, the fee for the 2025/26 session is £17,200.

Scholarships

The University of Portsmouth offers scholarships for eligible students. These scholarships include, Chancellor's Global Academic Merit Scholarship, which offers a £5,000 fee reduction for international students based on their academic achievement, and the Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship also offers a £2,500 fee reduction. Additionally, EU Scholarship offers £2,000 fee reduction for EU, EEA, or Swiss nationals (combined with Vice Chancellor's Global Development Scholarship under specific terms), the Sanctuary Scholarship offers full undergraduate tuition fees for asylum seekers, there are also External scholarships, such as Chevening Scholarship, the Sport Scholarships are offered to students of all nationalities and courses, students need to be top athletes in their sport to apply. Successful applicants can receive a bursary of £250 to £6,000 each year. These opportunities can help make studying at the University of Portsmouth more affordable.
