PhD Postgraduate Research in Engineering

University of East Anglia UEA

Course overview

This PhD Postgraduate Research in Engineering at the University of East Anglia (UEA) offers students the opportunity to conduct in-depth research in exciting, modern areas such as Energy Storage, Optical Sensors, Electrical Machines, and Solar Power. It will train them to become experts who can solve complex, real-world problems. Students can choose to apply for an existing research project or suggest their own research idea with the help of a teacher (supervisor).

Students can study for a standard PhD, which takes three years for research and up to one extra year to write their final significant document (thesis). Or, they can apply for a PhD based on work they have already published. Their job is checked through regular meetings with their supervisor and by their final written thesis or published papers, not by taking classes. The Engineering School provides a strong research environment with six expert groups, including those focused on Sustainable Energy and Materials.

Entry requirements

Candidates must apply directly to the University. Students are required to submit a detailed research proposal for their chosen topic, or apply for an advertised project, and select a primary supervisor. A well-arranged personal statement outlining their reasons for applying, along with an academic and/or employer reference, is also necessary. Students can upload their CVs with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need at least a UK upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree or a Master’s degree, or an equivalent qualification from an international university.

  • Their previous studies should be in a relevant technical or scientific field. Alternatively, a different degree will be acceptable if the student has sufficient relevant work experience in fields such as engineering or research.

English Language Requirements:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score 6.5 overall in the IELTS test.

  • This must include a minimum of 6.0 in each section (Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening) or submit equivalent secure English language test (SELT) scores.

  • If students do not meet this level, they may be able to take a pre-sessional English course
