MSc Data Science for Environmental Science

University of East Anglia UEA

Course overview

The MSc Data Science for Environmental Science at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is a one-year full-time master’s programme. It is designed for students who want to apply data science tools to environmental problems. The course covers how to collect, clean, and analyse large environmental datasets. It also shows how to build models for climate, ecosystems, water, or air systems. At the end of the programme, students complete an independent project where they apply what they have learned to a real environmental challenge.

The programme begins with core modules that build foundational knowledge in programming, such as statistics, data handling, and environmental science concepts. After that, students move into specialised topics. The final stage is a substantial individual project, supervised by a member of staff, where students explore a topic of their choice related to environmental data science. Students learn through a mix of lectures, hands-on computer labs, seminars, and workshops. Assessment methods include coursework, lab reports, programming tasks, written exams, and the final independent project or dissertation.
