BSc Nursing Children s
Course overview
The BSc Nursing (Children’s) programme at the University of Derby trains students to care for children, young people and families. It covers anatomy, physiology, child development, clinical skills, and ethical care for young patients. Students spend much time in real settings such as hospitals, community health, schools and voluntary services. The course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), so when graduates finish, they are eligible to apply to register as children’s nurses.
This is a full-time three-year undergraduate degree. In earlier years, students learn theory in classrooms, labs and simulation suites. They then move into placements to apply what they learn in real-life care. By the end of the course, students must have completed many hours of practice learning to build competence in caring for children. Students learn through lectures, seminars, simulated ward environments and live care placements. They practise clinical tasks, communication skills, decision-making and compassionate care. Assessment methods include written exams, case studies, reflective portfolios, practical skills tests and feedback from placement supervisors. The focus is on both knowledge and safe hands-on practice.
