Leading Education in Secure Environments (Short Course)

University of Chester

Course overview

Education is widely acknowledged as a powerful tool for steering individuals away from involvement in the criminal justice system. Despite its potential, the current reality for the 90,000 people in English prisons paints a bleak picture. Educational efforts within prison walls, often bundled under the umbrella of ‘purposeful activity’, focus on rehabilitation as their core objective.

However, the effectiveness of these endeavours remains questionable.

Key highlights

  • Examines leadership of education within prisons and secure settings
  • Explores education's role in steering people away from crime
  • Critically evaluates prison 'purposeful activity' and rehabilitation-focused education
  • Studied at postgraduate Level 7
