BSc Football Studies with Foundation Year

University of Lancashire

Course overview

The BSc Football Studies (with Foundation Year) at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) studies football as more than a sport, but also as a business, a social force and a tool for health, wellbeing and community. The foundation-year option helps students who lack the usual entry qualifications build skills first. After that, students study football from many sides, including sport science, media, business, coaching, performance analysis, and event organisation. The course aims to prepare graduates to work in football clubs, sports organisations, coaching, analysis, or sport-related business. The course lasts four years (foundation year plus three years of degree). The foundation year introduces students to basic sports-industry topics, study skills like writing and research, and early sport-and-wellbeing ideas.

After foundation year, the degree includes study of football culture, media and global sport markets, business and event management in sport, performance analysis, coaching theory and practical work, sport development, and sport wellbeing or public health angles. The course includes practical and real-world exposure, using the university’s sports-analysis and coaching labs, sport centre, and opportunities for industry visits or placements in football or sport organisations. Students learn through lectures, seminars, workshops, practical coaching and analysis sessions, group work, industry-linked visits and discussions. Assessment is through coursework, essays, reports, project and portfolio work, practical tasks, business or media-analysis tasks, and possibly placement-linked assignments.
