BSc Medical Sciences and Population Health
Course overview
The BSc Medical Sciences and Population Health programme at Swansea University offers students a broad education in medical science, public health, and how environments, society, and policy affect health. Students learn how diseases spread, why some communities suffer more health problems, and how data can guide health actions. The course blends life sciences with social and population perspectives so graduates can work in health, research, or policy.
In this programme, students take core modules in biology, physiology, epidemiology, demography, health systems, and social determinants of health. In Year 1, students build foundations in cell biology, genetics, human physiology, and introductory public health. In Years 2 and 3, they study more advanced topics like advanced epidemiology, mental health, data analysis, and population health management.
The degree is linked to the “Pathway to Medicine” scheme, so eligible students who meet the requirements may be guaranteed an interview for Graduate Entry Medicine. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, laboratory practicals, workshops, data tasks, group work, and independent study. Assessment is through written exams, essays, lab reports, oral presentations, data projects, and a final dissertation project.
