BEng Materials Science and Engineering

Swansea University

Course overview

The BEng Materials Science and Engineering at Swansea University gives students a strong start in understanding how materials work and how they are used in real life. Students will look at solids, metals, plastics, and other materials. They will learn about how materials are made, how their properties can change, and how they are used in things like cars, planes, buildings, and machines. The course combines classroom work, lab sessions, and practical activities so students get both knowledge and hands-on experience. The aim is for students to feel confident working in engineering fields where materials matter.

In the early years of the programme, students will cover the basics in maths, physics, and chemistry that are needed for materials work. As the years progress, they move into more specialised modules: for example, studying metals, polymers, composites, additive manufacturing, fatigue, and material failure. The final year usually includes a research project where students apply the skills they have learnt to investigate a real materials problem. Students learn through a mix of lectures, tutorials, lab work, group projects, and practical workshops. Assessment methods include written exams, lab reports, individual coursework, group work, and the final year project.
