MRes Advanced Materials Chemistry
Course overview
This research Master's course (MRes) helps students develop their chemistry knowledge, focusing on a major materials engineering research project. Students will study key topics like the uses of nanocomposites and inorganic solids, how a material's structure affects what it does, and advanced research techniques. The course can be completed full-time in one year or part-time in two years at the Clifton Campus.
The course is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), which confirms it meets the high-quality standards for jobs in the industry. Teaching includes a mix of lectures, seminars, and laboratory sessions, giving students hands-on experience with advanced equipment like NMR and mass spectrometry. Students are assessed using different methods, such as written exams, coursework, presentations, and their final, major research report.
Entry requirements
Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. An academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience and additional professional background.
Grade Requirements:
- Applicants need at least a second-class honours undergraduate degree (2.2) in a relevant science subject, such as Chemistry, Forensics, Pharmacology, or Pharmacy.
- Alternatively, a different degree will be acceptable if the student has enough relevant employment experience in a field related to chemistry or laboratory work, and non-standard qualifications will also be considered for entry.
English Proficiency:
- Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score at least 6.5 overall in the IELTS Academic test, with a minimum of 5.5 in each of the individual components (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
- The university accepts equivalent English language test scores and offers a Pre-Sessional English course for those who need to improve their language skills before starting their course.
