BA Communications and Linguistics

Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

The BA Communications and Linguistics at Nottingham Trent University is an undergraduate degree that blends the study of language, media, communication and society. Students learn about how language works, how messages are made, how media is used, and prepare for roles in communications, media, research or language-centred careers. The course brings together linguistics (the study of language) and communications (how people share and interpret meaning) so that students develop strong skills in analysis, writing, speaking and using media.

This programme is three years full-time on the City Campus of Nottingham Trent University. In the first year, students gain core knowledge about language, meaning, communication theory and media practice. By the second and third years, students take optional modules in areas such as journalism, PR, discourse analysis, language in health, forensic linguistics and media campaigns. Teaching happens through lectures, seminars, workshops, group projects and media production tasks. Students use digital tools, create podcasts, videos, campaigns, and work on language data. Assessment uses essays, media projects, presentations, reports, videos and a major research project or creative piece in the final year.
