Foundation Year in Law and Social Sciences

Course Overview

The Foundation Year in Law and Social Sciences at Middlesex University will prepare students to enter an undergraduate degree in law, criminology, or sociology. This one-year course is designed for students who do not have the required qualifications or who need to strengthen their academic knowledge in a specialist area.

Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, they will progress directly to a three-year degree course such as BSc Criminology, BSc Criminology with Psychology, BSc Criminology with Policing and Investigations, or LLB Law.

During the course, students will gain a deep understanding of legal principles, particularly the Foundations of Legal Knowledge, and develop key skills for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam and the Barristers Training Course. They will also learn to be aware of the ethical, social, political, economic, cultural, and historical contexts of law.

The programme includes modules that allow students to build their legal knowledge in areas of interest, while also enhancing their legal writing and analytical skills.

Entry Requirements for Sri Lankan Students

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants are expected to have qualifications equivalent to A-levels at DDE–CC or a BTEC Diploma at MPP.
  • A combination of A-Level, BTEC, and other accepted qualifications that total the required UCAS Tariff points is accepted by the university.

English Proficiency:

  • If English is not your first language, you will need an overall IELTS Academic score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 in each part of the test.
  • The university also accepts other test scores, such as TOEFL or PTE.
