Course overview

Our BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (with Foundation Year) provides an alternative route into undergraduate study. This is ideal if, for example, you do not have the necessary qualifications or cannot meet the entry requirements to begin your studies on the standard three-year degree course. The additional foundation year helps you better prepare for science-based degree-level study.

On successful completion, you can either progress to the first year of the sport and exercise science degree or switch to a different specialist sport science degree. As well as a solid grounding in essential biology, maths, and computer science, you’ll get a taste of what learning is like at this higher level. Under the supervision of one of our academics, for example, you’ll plan and conduct research on a relevant topic - developing the same research skills you will need to complete your undergraduate dissertation or research project.

With strong ties to leading sports organisations and professional clubs throughout the UK, Bangor enjoys an international reputation in sport and exercise psychology, motor control and learning, clinical exercise physiology and in strength, and conditioning. The expertise of our staff spans performance psychology, human physiology, talent development, athlete monitoring, skill learning, training effectiveness, training, and injury. A big advantage of this integrated four-year programme is the flexibility in the choices available once you successfully complete the Foundation Year.

Depending on your interests and career ambitions at this stage, it allows you to progress to Year 1 of any one of the following three-year undergraduate degrees: BSc Sport and Exercise Science BSc Adventure Sport Science BSc Sport Science, Coaching and Physical Education BSc Sport and Exercise Psychology. An ideal location to study sport, North Wales offers a full range of outdoor pursuits, such as hiking, canoeing, climbing, and extreme sports like white water rafting, mountain biking, zip lining and caving. Our own state-of-the-art sports facilities include a World Rugby and FIFA standard 3G artificial pitch, aerobics and cycling studios, covered tennis and netball courts, and the Platform 81 Performance Training Centre, which is used by Weightlifting Wales, whose athletes have won over 50 Commonwealth medals since 1954.
