MSc Behaviour Change

University of Surrey

Course overview

The MSc Behaviour Change programme is an interdisciplinary postgraduate course that explores the science of human conduct and its relevance across fields like psychology, philosophy, politics, and computer science. Students study different theories and frameworks to understand why people act the way they do and how to develop evidence-based solutions to encourage beneficial changes.

The course includes compulsory modules on qualitative research methods and the philosophy, politics, and policy of behaviour change. Students complete a dissertation, which can be a traditional research project or a collaboration with an external organisation to address a pressing, real-world behavioural problem, thereby enhancing practical skills.

Entry requirements

To be enrolled, candidates need to submit a personal statement and a relevant academic and/or employer reference. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants typically need at least a second-class undergraduate degree (2:2 minimum) in a relevant subject. Relevant subjects are broad and include areas such as Psychology, Sociology, Business, Computer Science, and Politics.
  • Alternatively, candidates with a degree in a different field will be considered if they have enough relevant professional experience in an area such as health promotion or policy work.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need an IELTS Academic score of 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.5 in all other sections, or they may submit equivalent English language test scores.
