MA Translation, Interpreting and AI

University of Surrey

Course overview

The MA Translation, Interpreting and AI at the University of Surrey in Guildford is a modern programme that combines professional translation and interpreting training with the latest AI and language technology. It is one of the few courses in the UK to do this. It prepares you for the changing language services industry with a strong practical focus.

You build skills in translation practice, different interpreting types (consecutive, dialogue, and sight translation), remote interpreting, and using AI tools such as neural machine translation, generative AI, and speech technology. The course works with language pairs involving English, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and others, depending on demand.

Training uses advanced interpreting labs and technology rooms, with workshops, seminars, and real projects. Assessments include practical translation and interpreting tasks, essays, presentations, and a dissertation. Graduates gain skills for a technology-focused career, ready for freelance work or jobs in international organisations.
