LLM Professional Legal Practice SQE Pathway

The LLM programme lasts for one year equip students with the legal knowledge to prepare thoroughly for the Solicitors Qualifying Examination 1 (SQE 1). The course is a pathway to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales, combining academic study with a focus on professional practice preparation. It improves students’ chances of success in the SQE exams while also awarding a master's degree in law.

Students learn from a team of experienced practising lawyers and academics, using workshops and an online learning tool for SQE 1 preparation. The programme includes practical assessments in areas like client interviewing, advocacy, and negotiation, which directly prepares students for the SQE 2 assessment and life as a solicitor. Students also gain real experience through pro bono projects and access to legal databases.

Grade Requirements:

• Candidates need a 2:1 degree, or an international equivalent in law.
• Other international equivalents to a degree in law are also accepted.

English Proficiency:

• Candidates need to score at least 6.5 overall in the IELTS test, with no component below 6.0.
• Other English language test scores, such as PTE Academic and TOEFL IBT tests, are accepted, amongst others.

The international students’ tuition fee for the LLM Professional Legal Practice (SQE Pathway) programme at the University of Surrey is £20,700.
