Course Overview

The MSc in Advanced Computer Science with Software Engineering is a postgraduate programme for those with an undergraduate degree in a related computing discipline. It is designed to develop existing software engineering skills and teach advanced techniques for creating large, reliable, and secure software systems. The curriculum is focused on the practical application of skills to design and deploy modern software systems across a number of different areas. This is a full-time, 12-month course that begins in January.

The programme is structured with two teaching semesters, each with three or four modules, followed by a three-month research project during the summer. Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions in specialist laboratories. Assessment is based on a blend of individual and group work, examinations, and laboratory-based practical work. Roughly half of the classes are assessed by coursework, with the others using a combination of coursework and exams.

Entry Requirements for Nigerian Students

Applicants need to submit a personal statement, and a relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate their work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • To be enrolled, you need at least a lower second-class (2:2) Honours degree, or an international equivalent, in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • You also should have strong software development skills, preferably in Java or another object-oriented language.
  • A degree completed more than five years ago requires a detailed CV to show relevant work experience.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants from countries where English is not the main language need an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with no individual section score below 5.5. Other English language tests like TOEFL and PTE are also accepted by the university.

Cost of Study

The annual tuition fee for international students on the MSc Advanced Computer Science with Software Engineering (January start) at the University of Strathclyde is £30,250.

Scholarships

The university offers a number of scholarships to help students fund their studies. This includes the Glasgow 850 International Masters Scholarships, which provide an award of £5,000 for eligible international students applying for postgraduate taught degrees. The Faculty of Engineering also has a limited number of Dean's International Excellence Awards, which are worth £7,000 and £10,000 and are offered to exceptional applicants.
