PhD Genetics
Course overview
This PhD Genetics at the University of Kent is a research degree focused on understanding the living cell and its processes, with a strong emphasis on molecular science. Expertise in areas like biochemistry, microbiology, and biomedical science is used to produce ground-breaking ideas in fields such as genetics, molecular biology, and computational biology. Research projects are centred around laboratory work or computer analysis, with students tackling a focused research project right from the start of the course.
The degree takes three to four years if studied full-time, or five to six years if studied part-time. During this time, students work closely with a team of supervisors, including their main supervisor and other experts who give independent advice on their progress. They also complete certain courses designed to teach them useful skills that they can use in many different careers.
Entry requirements
Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required. Students have the option to upload their CVs along with their applications to show their work experience.
Grade Requirements:
-
Applicants need at least a 2:1 (upper second-class) undergraduate degree in a subject that is relevant to genetics. Acceptance of a candidate is ultimately decided by the supervisor after an interview, and all applications are considered individually.
-
A different degree qualification will be acceptable if the student has enough relevant professional or academic work experience in an allied field, such as biomedical science.
English Language Requirements:
-
Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds need to score at least 6.5 overall in IELTS (with a minimum of 6.0 in Reading and Writing, and 5.5 in Speaking and Listening), or submit equivalent test scores from another accepted English language test.
