MPharm Pharmacy
Course overview
The MPharm Pharmacy programme at the University of Kent is a professionally accredited degree delivered by the Medway School of Pharmacy. This four‑year full‑time course (or five years if taken with the preparatory year) develops a deep understanding of the science of medicines, patient safety, therapeutics, and pharmaceutical practice. The curriculum emphasises how medicines interact with the body, how they should be manufactured and handled, and how pharmacists provide care in both community and hospital settings. During the course, students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, preparing them for a career as a registered pharmacist in the UK.
The course is structured around three interlinked themes, which are the science of medicines, professional pharmacy practice, and biomedical science and therapeutics. There are integrated modules covering body systems, drug delivery, patient care, pharmacology, and prescribing. This MPharm Pharmacy course is accredited in “Part 1” by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), which is essential for eventual registration as a pharmacist. Learning in Kent’s MPharm course combines lectures, seminars, tutorials, independent study, and laboratory classes. Assessment takes place in several forms: written exams, practical lab assessments, case‑based work, presentations, and a substantial research project in the final year. There are structured external placement weeks during the course, giving students hands-on experience in real‑life pharmacy practice.
