PhD Postgraduate Research in Law
Course overview
The PhD Postgraduate Research in Law at the University of East Anglia (UEA) allows candidates to complete independent legal or socio-legal research, culminating in a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy).
Students are supported by experienced academic staff who serve as supervisors, helping them to make a significant contribution to legal scholarship in areas like international law, criminal justice, or commercial law.
This research-focused degree requires candidates to submit a detailed research proposal of no more than 2,000 words with their application. The primary assessment is the final thesis, which is defended in a viva voce examination. Full-time study is typically three years (36 months).
Entry requirements
Before applying, candidates are strongly encouraged to contact a potential supervisor within the Law School to discuss their research idea and assess the fit. A strong application requires a carefully written research proposal, alongside a personal statement and relevant academic references.
Grade Requirements:
-
Successful applicants are normally expected to have an LLM or equivalent Master's degree.
-
This Master's qualification should include a final grade of Merit (60% or above) overall, with a minimum mark of 65% achieved in the dissertation or research component.
English Proficiency:
-
Candidates need to score at least 7.0 overall in the IELTS test, with a minimum of 6.5 in any other component.
-
Other English language test scores, such as PTE Academic and TOEFL IBT tests, are accepted, amongst others.
