LLB Law in Practice with Criminology with a Foundation Year

Swansea University

Course overview

This five-year programme includes a Foundation Year for students who need extra preparation before starting the LLB Law in Practice with Criminology degree. The course provides a complete foundation in both law and criminology, covering all the core legal knowledge required for professional practice. It also satisfies the academic requirements for those who wish to train as a barrister or prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Examinations (SQE).

A unique feature of this degree is the paid internship in a legal service environment during the third year, allowing students to gain first-hand experience. Learning is student-focused, with teaching in smaller groups during the Foundation Year, where they pick up necessary skills. Once the degree, they can use practical opportunities such as the University's Law Clinic and extra-curricular activities like mooting.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement that clearly discusses their reasons for choosing the course and other relevant information regarding their previous academic history. An academic and/or employer reference is also needed to support the application. Students have the option to upload their Curriculum Vitae (CV) along with their application to demonstrate any relevant work experience or professional history.

Grade Requirements:

  • The offer for acceptance onto the Foundation Year is a grade of DD at A level or equivalent qualifications. This Foundation Year is an ideal choice for students whose grades do not currently meet the requirements for direct entry to the four-year LLB programme.
  • Once the Foundation Year is completed, students move straight onto the full degree course.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants coming from a non-English speaking background must demonstrate their English language ability by submitting scores from an approved test.
  • Candidates need to achieve an overall score of at least 6.0 in the IELTS Academic test, with minimum scores of 5.5 in each section, or submit equivalent scores from a recognised test like a SELT.
