Solent University (Southampton)

BA Criminology and Sociology

Solent University (Southampton)

Course overview

This three-year course looks at the fascinating connection between crime and society, helping students become critical thinkers about justice, social issues, and inequality. The programme includes core topics such as Victimology, Global Crime, and the role of the media in shaping our views, helping students understand complex problems through scientific research. Students can also select optional modules, allowing them to focus on subjects that interest them most, like Youth Justice or Migration and Refugees.

A strong emphasis is placed on practical experience, with modules like Applied Sociology in the Community giving students the chance to work on real-world issues with external organisations. Learning is assessed through case studies, essays, portfolios, and in-class tests rather than traditional final examinations. Students can also benefit from using specialist facilities such as a mock courtroom and a portable crime scene for practical exercises.
