MSc Information Technology

Robert Gordon University

Course overview

This Master's programme is for individuals seeking to obtain a qualification in IT, either to recognise their current experience formally or to help those with a degree in a non-IT subject transition into a career in software development. The course teaches the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required in the IT sector, concentrating on areas such as software development, database systems, and web programming. Students use up-to-date equipment in the university's quality facilities.

The teaching involves a blend of lectures, small group discussions (tutorials), and hands-on lab sessions, all backed up by an online platform. Students' grades are based on continuous assessment, including written exams, reports, practical tests, and a final, long research paper (dissertation). The full-time programme usually lasts 12 to 16 months, but this time will be longer if students choose to do a professional work placement.

Entry requirements

Candidates are required to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other relevant information regarding their previous studies. A relevant academic and/or employer reference is also required for your application. Students have the option to upload their CV along with their applications to demonstrate any relevant work experience.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need at least a second-class (2:2) undergraduate honours degree or its equivalent in any subject outside of computing.
  • Alternatively, a degree with a lower classification will be acceptable if the student can demonstrate sufficient relevant work experience in an area such as software development or IT support.

English Proficiency:

  • Applicants whose first language is not English need to score 6.0 overall in the IELTS examination, with no score in any individual section being lower than 5.5.
  • The University also accepts equivalent Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) to meet this entry requirement.
