Nottingham Trent University

MSc Paramedic Science

Nottingham Trent University

Course overview

This is a two-year, full-time accelerated Master's degree that prepares graduates from suitable subjects to become registered paramedics. The course combines university study with about 1,200 hours of professional placement within two years, mainly within the ambulance service. Once students complete the degree, they can apply to register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The teaching involves a mixed learning approach, blending campus classes with online and self-assessed study. Performances are checked through practical tests (like OSCEs), case studies, essays, presentations, and a final research project (dissertation). This programme ensures students gain the enhanced skills and critical thinking required for urgent and emergency care every day.

Entry requirements

Candidates need to submit a personal statement in which they discuss their reasons for applying for the course and other information in relation to their studies. A relevant academic or employer reference is also required. Students have the choice of uploading their CV along with their applications to show their work experience. Candidates must also present a minimum of 150 hours of direct patient care experience gained before applying.

Grade Requirements:

  • Applicants need to have at least a second-class undergraduate degree (minimum 2:2) in a human science or subjects related to healthcare, such as human science, nursing, midwifery, or an allied health profession.

English Language Requirements:

  • If English is not the applicant's first language, an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 overall must be submitted for admission to the course.
