Bangor University

Course overview

The PhD Law at Bangor University is a research degree offered by the Bangor School of Law. All students are assigned a supervisor whose research interests match theirs. Under the guidance of the supervisor, the students develop a research topic, review relevant literature, choose appropriate research methods, and plan and write a substantial thesis. For a PhD, students must produce a thesis that makes a significant original contribution to knowledge in their chosen legal area. Upon completion, students defend their thesis in a viva-voce examination.

This PhD Law at Bangor University does not have modules in the same way a taught degree does; instead, the focus is on independent supervised research. Students' learning and assessment focus on research output and thesis quality, assessed by the supervisor and examiners. The School encourages applications in a wide range of legal fields, from European Law, Global Economic Law, Commercial Law, International Law, Environmental Law, Family Law, Criminal Law, and other research areas.
